A legacy of excellence in teaching, research and global collaboration
Delhi Public Library (DPL) is one of India's oldest and largest public library systems. Established in 1951 as a UNESCO-assisted pilot project, the library functions under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Over the decades, it has expanded into an extensive network of branch libraries, community libraries and mobile library services across Delhi.
The headquarters at S. P. Mukherjee Marg houses an extensive collection of books, journals, newspapers, government publications, children's literature, rare reference works and multilingual resources. The library serves students, researchers, civil services aspirants, professionals and general readers through its spacious reading halls, reference sections, digital catalogues and community outreach programmes.
Delhi Public Library actively promotes reading culture through book exhibitions, literary discussions, storytelling sessions, author interactions, reading campaigns, digital literacy workshops and cultural programmes. Mobile library vans continue to provide access to books in underserved areas of Delhi, making knowledge accessible to all sections of society.
The library remains an important knowledge resource for UPSC, SSC, Banking and university students due to its affordable membership, peaceful study environment and comprehensive collection of academic and competitive examination material.
